First Impressions when Reading a HoroscopeThe General Shape of a Chart Shows a Lot about Personality
A look at the overall shaping of the birth chart can give a general first impression of the 'type' of person behind the horoscope.
Most planets in the top half of the chart suggest someone who relates well with the world, and who will make the most of opportunities, which might lead to fulfilling achievements within the circle of society. Five or more planets below the line indicating the horizon signify the more introverted type of person. Someone who may have a great deal to offer the world, but feelings and emotions will play an important part. A strong cardinal influence brings the likelihood of rising quite quickly to a high position within a person's own sphere of life. If a large number of planets are in the fixed signs Taurus, Leo, Scorpio or Aquarius, it could take longer to achieve success. Even so, perseverance will bring results and the consequences will be lasting. Planets on angles, dignified, or in their own sign will be in a stronger position to motivate a person to success in an area of life depending on the planets and houses involved. A large number of planets from the eighth house through to the eleventh house of hopes and wishes can bring a great need for public recognition. And lastly, on the subject of general patterns, the number of planets falling in the second house of earnings and accumulated wealth, the sixth house of work, and the tenth house of career, should also be able to offer some impression on the opportunities and potentials for earning and acquiring material success. AspectsThe 'relationships' of the planets are always important. For instance, Mars in the tenth house can suggest motivation, energy and desire which will lead to prominence and recognition. But, if this planet receives stressful aspects from other points in the chart, impatience or the inability to work harmoniously within society could be his downfall. Arabian Points can be included in the chart analysis. The part of fortune which can be quite easily calculated by adding the sun sign and Ascendant and subtracting the Moon, suggests an area in life where the individual may be best able to express himself. The midheaven - the point where the Sun reaches its highest point in the sky, gives an indication of the person's intention towards the outside world; how he expresses himself and exerts himself towards these ambitions. Aries midheaven shows a goal-orientated personality. Taurus midheaven will desire prominence in order to provide material success, whilst a Gemini midheaven suggests an individual who is able to put his mind to good use in his professional concerns. With sensitive Cancer on the midheaven, this person will be strongly concerned about how he is regarded by others, whilst a midheaven in Leo brings a more out-going approach to professional affairs, with leadership ability. Practical, methodical and organised is the person with a Virgo midheaven, but the Libra midheaven will probably prefer to work in partnership. Scorpio midheaven will use a determined and independent approach towards his goals, and with Sagittarius at the midheaven, aims are likely to be far-reaching, but sometimes perhaps a little fanciful! Ambitious is the person with a Capricorn midheaven; humanitarian and likely to work well in groups is indicative of the Aquarius midheaven, whilst Pisces on the midheaven is not always practical, but success in creative or other talented endeavours is a possibility. A concentration of planets on the eastern side of the chart (from the tenth house through to the third) suggests an inner-strength; someone who will determine his own direction in life. Planets on the opposite side of the chart (the fourth house through to the ninth) suggests someone who may rely on, or be dependent upon others to lead the way.
